A plea for happiness

Reading about injustice, violence and suffering in the news these past days, I hope that happiness remains something we strive for. Because happiness is meaningful, happiness is caring and happiness is therefore sharing. I’m happy, happier, maybe happiest when those around me are happy. It’s contagious. Not just loved ones, but others too. I thrive when I help and care, though sometimes I can’t or not as much as I want to. Nevertheless I keep trying as much as I can. But fair to say, I’m worried. Worried that our focus for a meaningful life is gone, that we’re distracted, that we don’t nurture care and solidarity. And though it’s not my intention to lecture, I hope – even it is just for one minute or one meaningful moment – when and if you read this, your focus and therefore the focus of the people surrounding you shifts. Simply because you care: when you hold the door with a smile for the person after you or when you ask “How are you?” with genuine intent, and truly listen to what is happening (not coincidently shows resemblance with the word happiness) in that person’s life. Gestures so small and simple, but meaningful. Though I’m not someone who often shares messages on (social) media. But this in my belief is meaningful, hence worth sharing. So by sharing this, I hope it makes happiness happen just a little bit more. With care for the community and care for the connection. Just a thought, and luckily I’m not the only one. @thelancet.com
